In the last summer transfer window, one of the areas that FC Barcelona were expected to reinforce with the highest urgency was that of the midfield pivot. The only natural first-team pivot, Oriol Romeu had left the Catalan club, and the Blaugranes were linked with different options like Amadou Onana and Mikel Merino.
However, none of these players arrived at the club, but luckily, the youngsters Marc Bernal and Marc Casadó have been doing an excellent job in this regard, and the club’s need for a pivot has been fulfilled for the time being.
Still, as SPORT has reported, the former Bayern Munich player and a friend of Hansi Flick, Lothar Matthäus, has recommended Barcelona to sign a highly promising German defensive midfielder, Angelo Stiller.
The 23-year-old was already linked with the Blaugrana last summer, and now Matthäus has claimed that the young VfB Stuttgart player would be an excellent fit for Barcelona due to his playing style. He stated:
“Stiller would suit Barça well because of his playing style. I trust him, and if Barcelona made sales, his signing would be possible and logical.”
Matthäus further emphasized that the German midfielder has the potential to leave his mark at the Catalan club, adding: “Stiller could make his mark at Barcelona and organize their midfield.”
As Matthäus himself said, Barcelona will have to sell someone to be able to land the €28m-rated German midfielder as his contract with RB Salzburg goes till 2027, and he will not arrive for a fee lower than €30 million today, and with the way he is performing, this amount can rise up even further going forward.
Having trained at the Bayern Munich youth system, where he coincided with Hansi Flick, he is now established as a key part of the VfB Stuttgart first team. But it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will take Matthäus’ advice as they already have Casadó and Bernal for this role, two youngsters who can remain at the club for years to come.
