Even with their financial problems, FC Barcelona were able to address one of the main weaknesses in their squad in the last summer transfer window by incorporating Joao Cancelo from Manchester City on a season-long loan for the right-back position.

The Portuguese did not need long to adapt to his new surroundings and has been an integral part of the squad for Xavi Hernandez this season. He has not only performed well as a right-back but has also been impressive whenever he had to fill in at the left-back position or even at the left wing.

As a result, decision-makers at Barcelona have been clear that they want to retain him for at least the coming season. However, as the Catalans understand that they would not be able to pay the fee that Manchester City is going to demand for him, another loan remains their most realistic option to retain the fullback.

However, SPORT reports that Cancelo’s future at Barcelona is highly uncertain at the moment, primarily because Manchester City are not interested in another loan for the defender, but want a full sale to whichever side pays the highest fee for him.

Cancelo is not a part of the plans of Pep Guardiola, but he still has a contract that ties him to the English club till 2027. The Citizens have revalued the defender at €40 million after his good season at Barcelona, and there are clubs in the Premier League and Saudi Arabia that can pay this amount for him this summer.

On the other hand, Barcelona cannot even think of investing such a high amount on a right-back, particularly because they are prioritizing the signing of a midfield pivot and a left-footed winger.

In such a scenario, Cancelo’s own role will be pivotal in determining where he plays next season. As things stand, he wants to continue at Barcelona, but it remains to be seen if his mind will change if a big offer comes in this summer.

Jorge Mendes can still try to convince City to agree on another loan with the condition to purchase him at the end of the season. This is the best that Barcelona can do at the moment.
