The situation of the right-back position at FC Barcelona continues to be one that is shrouded in uncertainty as of right now. The club has certain priorities for transfers and while the right-back recruits are not exactly top of the pecking order, it still remains clear that it is a position that does indeed require attention.
The various opportunities for the position have arrived in the form of similarly varying names from across the continent. However, it seems the most decorated and experienced option from amongst them might just be slipping from the fingers of Barcelona.
As per SPORT, Joao Cancelo is currently in a position where he considers a loan move no longer desirable for his future. Originally hoping to stay at Bayern Munich following his loan, the Bavarians decided not to activate his purchase option for €70 million, a price they consider too high.
The Portuguese fullback is now also on the radar of FC Barcelona and was originally motivated to represent La Blaugrana himself, but similar to Bayern, the Catalans are not yet in a position to activate a purchase option involving significant funds.
Barcelona would ideally have preferred a loan move, but it seems neither the player nor Manchester City are currently open to that.
Moreover, the new involvement of Premier League side Arsenal has also shaken things up. The Gunners are reported to be willing to spend around €30 million on the Portuguese, but they too consider Manchester City’s initial demands as too high.
With the possibility of Julian Araujo and now potentially even Thomas Meunier on the table, it seems the chance of signing Cancelo will continue to slip away unless other advancements take place within the next few days, otherwise, Barcelona will have to look for other opportunities that may arise over the course of the summer.
