Up to now, FC Barcelona have incorporated only Vitor Roque in their squad in the current winter transfer window. Their finances have not allowed the Catalans to undertake their moves freely in the market, but they are still looking for one more player this January.
As Xavi himself admitted in his latest press conference, Gavi’s injury has left a gaping hole in the Barcelona squad. Deco and his staff are looking to fill in this gap, and have several names on their list for this purpose.
However, SPORT reports that another name has now gotten on that list. This latest addition is the Manchester City player Kalvin Phillips, who has received Barcelona’s attention in recent days.
The Englishman is getting only sparse minutes under Pep Guardiola, and has asked to leave the club in January. This situation has aroused the Blaugranes’ interest in him.
Phillips joined Manchester City two years ago for €48 million from Leeds United. However, injuries and competition with currently one of the best midfielders in the world, Rodri, meant that he was not a very prominent part of Guardiola’s squad.
Despite his lack of prominence at City, the footballer has a high demand in Europe. In addition to Barcelona, Atletico Madrid are also inquiring about the player, and the Mattress Makers are one of the competitors for his signature. However, Phillips is expected to remain in the Premier League with another club.
The midfielder wants his future to be sorted out by next week at the latest. Barcelona have already submitted documentation regarding the injection of €200 million from the sale of 49% of rights for Barca Studios.
With this leverage, the Catalans can now make a move for a midfielder of their choice, and Kalvin Phillips can very well be the club’s choice.
