The right-back position remains a genuine issue and headache for FC Barcelona as they look to find a specialized full-back for that particular position. As it stands, the club has had to rely on the likes of Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo, central defenders by specialty, to cover that rather vulnerable flank from time to time.
However, there may be some salvation for FC Barcelona in the form of an out-of-favor fullback currently contracted to English Premier League side Manchester City, who is on loan to German champions Bayern Munich at this moment in time.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Joao Cancelo wishes to play for FC Barcelona next season and an option to bring him in on a loan is a feasible concept that the Catalan club is currently studying and would be keen on.
The player’s agent Jorge Mendes is also reportedly pushing for such a deal to materialize and happen, as it favors both Barcelona and Joao Cancelo, who due to personal issues with the City coaching staff had already been loaned out to Bayern this season as they considered him surplus to requirements.
The Portuguese fullback remains a player of elite quality and standards, as he continues to be a proficient offensive as well as a defensive unit to have in the team who can comfortably operate on both flanks of the defensive line.
Despite the supposed variety of advantages such a deal would possess, it also comes with the information that Barcelona believe Manchester City will not make it easy for this deal to happen and would look to settle the player’s departure to other clubs before they consider Barcelona.
Contracted to City until 2027, even if his arrival does not materialize, FC Barcelona believe they have another alternative lined up in the form of Villarreal’s Juan Foyth, and previously also had Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard amongst such alternatives, but it now seems that the latter would prefer other options to FC Barcelona.
