FC Barcelona significantly strengthened themselves over the last summer, and these reinforcements, coupled with the weak finances of the club, mean there would be very little work for the club to do in the winter window.
Still, there are some positions that need to be further reinforced, either in the winter or the next summer window. The most prominent position in need of reinforcement is that of the midfield pivot, as Oriol Romeu is the only midfielder available who plays naturally in this position, and his recent form has been a source of worry for Xavi.
Guido Rodriguez ending his contract next summer
Several players have been linked with Barcelona in recent months for this position, but the Catalans seem to be particularly interested in the Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez.
The Argentinian has been playing with the Verdiblancos since 2020, and since that time, his value has increased from €4 million, which Betis had paid for his signing, to €28 million.
However, this rise in value can end up not benefitting Real Betis as Rodriguez’s contract is going to end next summer, and the two parties have not agreed upon a renewal yet. Thus, Betis will have to sell him in the winter if they want to get something for him.
Manchester United also interested in the player
This situation makes the midfielder a highly alluring target for Barcelona, but the Catalans are not the only side interested in him.
According to SPORT, Manchester United is also pushing to sign the midfielder, especially after a hamstring injury is expected to keep Casemiro out till January. Ten Haag has Mc Tominay and Amrabat to cover for the Brazilian but has still asked for Rodriguez’s signing.
For now, Barcelona and United remain the competitors for the Argentine. However, more clubs can enter the fray in the coming days, as no one wants to miss the chance to sign a midfielder of his quality at a cut price.
