It is never a pleasant sight to see a football player suffer a serious injury, irrespective of whether he plays for your team or not. For example, it was as devastating to see Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao suffer ACL injuries for Real Madrid as it was to see Marc Bernal suffer the same fate for Barcelona.

However, with every injury, it is also an opportunity for someone else who has been waiting to get a chance. At Barcelona this season, Bernal’s injury coupled with the club’s inability to bring in anyone due to FFP proved to be a turning point for Marc Casado.

The ex-Barca Atletic captain has taken the opportunity afforded to him with both hands and established himself not just as the engine room of Hansi Flick’s team but also as one of the best defensive midfielders going around in the world of football at the moment.

Casado was quizzed about the impact of the 17-year-old Barcelona gem’s injury and how it proved to be a turning point in his career. As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, here is what the 21-year-old had to say:

“Marc Bernal’s injury was tough on everyone. He’s recovering now, and I want to send him all my encouragement. It’s not easy to have such an injury, but we are confident he will come back stronger.”

“The game against Valladolid came right after his injury, and I knew I had an opportunity there that I had to seize if I wanted to play a significant role at Barça. I knew it would be an important match for me. I tried to give my best level, and fortunately, it turned out to be a good game.”

What happened to Marc Bernal against Rayo Vallecano was extremely unfortunate. However, it also paved the way for the 21-year-old to become a mainstay in Hansi Flick’s team and it is safe to say that Casado hasn’t put a foot wrong since.

Now, despite injured players like Frenkie de Jong and Gavi returning to the mix, Casado has established himself as a starter. The 21-year-old has also received his maiden call-up to the Spain senior squad and is looking to make his debut under Luis de la Fuente.

There is often a narrative that luck doesn’t just about come by, you need to work for it. It is safe to say that with his hard work, he has manufactured his own luck and with his sheer determination, he has been a regular in the first team. Let’s wait and see how his career plays out from here on.
