The tumultuous and rocky relationship of Lionel Messi with PSG finally comes to an end. After endless murmurs about a possible reunion with his boyhood club FC Barcelona, the Argentine has a significant decision to make in regards to his future, owing to his Parisian chapter concluding at last.
In spite of appearing in the recent photoshoot for PSG’s new kit reveal, PSG manager Christophe Galtier confirmed the news of Leo’s departure, “I had the privilege of coaching the best player in the history of football. It will be Leo’s last match at the Parc des Princes against Clermont”.
Despite matters ending in bittersweet fashion as Messi’s suspension and outrage from the fans contributed to an imminent exit, Galtier defended the 7-time Ballon d’Or winner.
In his most recent press conference, the PSG coach made his stance clear: “The remarks, the criticism… Not at all justified. Not at all justified. When you’re 35 years old with a World Cup in the middle of the season and in the end, your stats are around 21 goals and 22 assists…“.
Messi heads into the summer transfer window as a free agent. Links with Barcelona continue to fluctuate, while offers from other European clubs remain in the background. Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal also remain an option, with their 1.2 Billion yearly salary proposal.
Crowned the most decorated player in football history as well as the all-time top scorer in the five major European Leagues, Leo is still hungry for success. As reported by Gerard Romero, his reunion with Barcelona currently depends on La Liga’s response to the viability plan.
Jorge Messi has also reportedly informed La Liga that Messi wants Barcelona, but he just requires security and assurances. Recent pressure by the Messi camp appears to be so Barcelona and La Liga can speed up the process.
In any case, if the long-awaited reunion does not materialize, Messi still will have suitors from Europe to analyze. His reported €12M annual salary at Barcelona can undeniably be matched by more financially strengthened sides. In addition, Saudi Arabia’s mega offer is still present.
