FC Barcelona are no strangers to reuniting with former players and accomplices. The Catalan giants have a rich history filled with the presence of many greats of the game. However, Barcelona are not the only Catalan side this year catching the headlines.
Girona, in a unique twist of fate, are one of the most fascinating sides to watch in La Liga this year. Currently, they are tied on points with Real Madrid as they sit atop La Liga having 35 points to their name. Typically, teams that seem to be doing well in Spain often get random rumors attached to their names.
In Girona’s case, former player Oriol Romeu is the name being linked to the side. However, as he remains currently contracted to Barcelona, Girona coach Michel was very clear about his future, as highlighted by SPORT: “No, no. Oriol is a great player and I do miss him, but he is a Barça player.”
Furthermore, he insisted that he sees Romeu at Barcelona for years to come: “I believe he will continue to defend the Barcelona colors in the coming years, I’m sure.”
Last season, Romeu was one of the most trusted characters within Michel’s team. Ultimately, he was taken away by FC Barcelona as a short-term solution to their own pivot problems.
However, in recent times, it is clear to see that Romeu may be falling flat just below the standards that Barcelona has for their players.
With 34 games played in the 2022/23 season, he was undoubtedly one of Girona’s most influential players. Despite this, it seems that Michel’s side already has overcome his loss and is flying high this season. For FC Barcelona, they are a direct competitor now, and one they will face off against soon enough.
