New Barcelona signing appointed as the captain of his national team

Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan

FC Barcelona made a number of quality additions to their squad over the summer, but none of them is more exciting than the highly decorated German midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan.

Now in the last phases of his career, Gundogan has been aging like fine wine. The German international played a key part in Manchester City’s season last season, as the Citizens went on to win all the trophies they were competing for. Gundogan led from the front, as he was the first captain of the Manchester City team last season.

Gundogan appointed as Germany’s captain

There has been no doubt about the German’s quality, and his career in recent years has also provided him with highly effective leadership skills. These skills have also been recognized by his national team now.

As Germany look to face Japan and France in the coming few days, the coach, Hansi Flick, has made some shake-ups in the team.

The captains of the team have also been changed, with the responsibilities of being the first captain of the national team now given to Ilkay Gundogan. Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich has been appointed as the vice-captain.

Gundogan to captain German team in the absence of Manuel Neuer

Hansi Flick remained diplomatic regarding the future of the captaincy once Manuel Neuer returns from his injury. “The situation is that Manu first has to recover,” Flick explained.

Traditionally, in Neuer’s absence, the captain’s armband had been entrusted to either Thomas Müller or Joshua Kimmich but Flick has decided to give the armband to Ilkay Gundogan.

“I have now decided to give Ilkay Gundogan the armband. Together with Joshua Kimmich, there is now a leadership duo. I’m very glad that both have committed to it. That also gives us more energy.”

This is another high for the Barcelona midfielder after he won everything with Manchester City last season. Now Gundogan will be looking to lead his national team to victory in the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers.
