Newcastle United may look towards Barcelona for defensive signing

FC Barcelona know that their plans for the summer transfer window have not been fully realized. Beyond just the arrival of Dani Olmo at the club, La Blaugrana have set their sights on more potential arrivals as well. At the moment, however, the financial situation of Barcelona is still restricting them to an extent.

Reports continue to emerge stating that Deco and Barcelona still have more objectives to fulfil during this transfer window, but they need to make some exits possible before they can pursue their own objectives. Unfortunately, it has been rather difficult for Barça to ensure departures this summer.

However, in the midst of all this uncertainty and confusion, the Catalan club may find a lifeline. According to Mundo Deportivo, English Premier League club Newcastle United have now highlighted Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen as a great alternative to their first-choice defensive target.

Marc Guehi, English defender who currently plays for Crystal Palace, is the man that Newcastle wanted to primarily go for. Unfortunately for them, Palace has been rejecting all their advances and it has now led to the team looking for alternative options elsewhere.

Christensen, at least for them, would present a viable option to consider. Having already spent time in the Premier League with Chelsea and having shown his ability there, he would be a signing without too much risk despite the fact that he currently plays for FC Barcelona over in Spain.

Fortunately for Barça, this could benefit them as well. As it stands, it is clear to see that Christensen will likely not be a guaranteed starter in Hansi Flick’s team. Even against Valencia in the recent victory, he did not start and the German coach instead preferred to start the likes of Pau Cubarsi, Marc Bernal, and Marc Casado over him.

He did arrive as a substitute but that was only once Cubarsi was at risk of being sent off potentially. Moreover, even other injured Barcelona stars are going to return eventually, and their positions are more or less guaranteed as starting roles. This would push Christensen even further down the hierarchy in the squad and could significantly reduce his playing time.

Considering all of these factors, it may not be impossible for Barcelona to offload the player if the right offer arrives. Given that he originally signed as a free agent, his transfer would also mean that everything earned would be a profit and it would also open up salary space that Barça could use to register other players and also potentially bring in new arrivals.
