Despite bringing some reinforcements during the last summer transfer window, FC Barcelona currently have a very thin midfield. Two important midfielders, Frenkie de Jong and Pedri, are currently out with injuries, and Xavi has to rely on youngsters like Fermin Lopez to cover for these absences.
Furthermore, Barcelona do not have a cover for Oriol Romeu, who is the only natural midfield pivot in the squad. Therefore, the Catalans might be tempted to bring in a midfielder in the coming months, and one quality midfielder was already been associated with Barcelona in recent days.
Rumours of special clause for Barcelona
This midfielder in question is the Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes, who is currently playing for the Premier League side Newcastle United. In recent days, there has been a rumor circulating the media that the player has a secret clause in his contract that will allow him to leave for Barcelona for a lower sum than his release clause.
Guimaraes renewed his contract till 2028 at the start of this month, in which his release clause was set at £100 million (€121 million). Such a release clause is achievable by some of the clubs interested in him, like Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain.
Furthermore, it was reported that Barcelona would be able to get him for only €65-70 million due to a special clause which had been inserted in his contract because of his fondness for the Catalan club.
Romano rejects rumors of lower release clause for Barcelona
However, the trusted journalist, Fabrizio Romano has now negated all such claims of a secret clause and claims that every club, including Barcelona, will have to pay the £100 million (€121 million) to get him from Newcastle United unless they can negotiate a lower price.
Thus, Barcelona would not be getting a special discount on the Brazilian, but even if they got it, it would have been difficult for Barcelona to shell out even €65 million on a midfielder in their current financial situation, and Guimaraes does not appear as a realistic target for the Catalans.
