Massive changes are taking place within the structure of FC Barcelona, and while certain things have been clear since quite a long time, it is only now that Barcelona have decided to make the appointment of the new Barcelona Sporting Director official.
FC Barcelona have confirmed that former player and agent Anderson Luis de Souz “Deco” will be signing from today onwards as the official Sporting Director of the Catalan club, taking over from the post previously held by Jordi Cruyff.
“The first team player between 2004 and 2008 signs a contract as sporting director at the Club for the next three seasons.” read the statement of the club in an official announcement on their website.
Moreover, the statement also provided more insight into what exactly would be the objective of Deco in the position that he now holds at FC Barcelona, stating:
“Deco will be in charge of setting FC Barcelona’s sporting philosophy and putting together the squad with the coach and becoming head of the football section.”
However, with this appointment comes the unexpected departure of the current Director of Football Mateu Alemany, who will be relieved of his duties come the end of the summer transfer window on the 2nd of September.
At the moment, both Deco and Mateu Alemany will continue to work together to finalize proceedings and operations yet to be concluded during this ongoing summer transfer window, and only then will FC Barcelona decide to conclude their dealings with Alemany.
Even prior to this official announcement, Deco had been unofficially working on several deals for FC Barcelona and even actively acting as a representative of the club when needed for certain operations or scenarios.
As for more clarification regarding the new sporting structure being considered to proceed within Barcelona, the club’s official statement confirmed the following: “In the coming weeks, the Club will release details of the FC Barcelona sporting structure.”
