Barcelona finally arrive at their very first official league encounter of 2024. Following a rather unconvincing first half of the season, this is a chance to have a fresh start. With Girona and Real Madrid pulling ahead, Barcelona need to push forward to stay on their tails.
Xavi’s side know how important this game is, so whatever their game plan is, it needs to be executed flawlessly. Moreover, Garcia Pimienta is expected to be especially motivated to take on Barcelona. For this reason, no mistakes can be afforded in this game.
Ahead of the game, Barcelona have now officially released their starting eleven to take on Las Palmas. Knowing what is at stake if they drop points, Xavi has taken no chances with the quality of players that he has chosen to field.
Between the sticks, Spanish goalkeeper Inaki Pena returns to his post. Under normal circumstances, Pena remains as a deputy to Marc Andre Ter Stegen. However, with the German currently sidelined, the Spaniard has taken his place and will hope to defend Barça’s goal tonight.
Ahead of Pena, the two central defenders are Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo. Both the Frenchman and the Uruguayan have been loyal servants to the clubs, and their partnership is often rewarding. However, they will still need to stay on their toes.
On either side of those two, the fullback positions are occupied by two very dangerous wide players. Joao Cancelo, on loan from Manchester City, and Alejandro Balde, Barça’s own prodigal left-back, take on the fullback responsibilities.
Over in the midfield, German veteran Ilkay Gundogan starts as the primary pivot. Ahead of him, his two interiors are Frenkie De Jong and Sergi Roberto. The latter was key in Barça’s previous victory, and he will be hoping to deliver more of the same.
Finally, the frontline consists of Polish striker Robert Lewandowski leading the attack. His wings are occupied by Brazilian winger Raphinha, and Spanish forward Ferran Torres. Vitor Roque and Joao Felix, for now, start on the bench.
