For FC Barcelona, the club’s identity in itself is a key aspect that makes the entity what it is. ‘Mes Que Un Club’ and beyond, La Blaugrana has always been much more than simply being a football club. A representative for many things, Barcelona has always stood for things that transverse within and beyond the world of football.

One of those things is the fact that the club is utterly and completely Catalan. Based in Catalonia, the club has always stood out for its political and social connection to Catalan nationalism and identity as a whole. To represent this as well as possible, several avenues have been pursued over the years.

Whether it be to create special kits that highlight the yellow and red colors of Catalonia, or apply special stripes or details on things to make it stand out, Barcelona always has an attachment to their regional origin. However, the club’s latest attempt to personify this attachment comes in the form of a new mascot.

As revealed by FC Barcelona officially during the gala of their 125th year anniversary, the club will have a new mascot moving forward called ‘Cat’, which is a mascot specifically created for the special occasion of the anniversary itself but it will have a rather significant role moving forward.

An introduction of this new cat-like Catalan mascot has been provided by Barça as well, stating:

“We welcome “Cat” the mascot, created for the 125th anniversary by the Grangel brothers in collaboration with FC Barcelona… A true culer, inclusive, charismatic, fun… The perfect mascot for the best club in the world!”

In terms of the design, it follows the look of a large, cartoonish cat made up of the red and yellow Catalan colors. It has blue eyes, and a yellow body with red stripes running across it in various positions. Moreover, it also wears the Barcelona home kit for this season to represent the club as well.

This new mascot is expected to be a constant figure both in terms of a physical entity but also a digital one. The club will reportedly look to use it in the case of merchandising and other digital benefits that it can end up providing. Even at the presentation during the gala itself, the mascot managed to catch a lot of eyes and smiles.

It is also reportedly expected that this mascot will likely be present during Barça’s home games at the Montjuic Stadium moving forward. While it has been quite some time since La Blaugrana last had a public mascot such as ‘Cat’, this could be an interesting development to follow. In the upcoming game against Las Palmas, which is set to take place at the Montjuic Stadium, perhaps the club could even send the mascot out ahead of the game.
