Spain has had an excellent year in football so far, winning both the Euros and the Olympics recently. La Roja was easily the most exciting team to watch in the Euros, mainly due to the presence of Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal.
With the international break coming soon, everyone was eager to see what squad Luis de la Fuente would name for their first assignment post the Euros victory. Now, the official squad list has been released.
The squad that De la Fuente has named includes just four Barcelona players – Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Dani Olmo, and Ferran Torres. All four players were involved for Spain in the recently concluded Euros.
The likes of Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Alejandro Balde, and Fermin Lopez do not find a spot in the squad list. It feels especially harsh to Fermin, who was Spain’s best player in the recently concluded Olympic games.
Ex-Barcelona player Oscar Mingueza has been called up to the Spain squad along with Pepelu, who plays for Valencia. Goalkeeper Unai Simon, who is the first-choice between the sticks, has been left out through injury.
Aleix Garcia who now plays for Bayer Leverkusen has also earned a call-up to the Spain squad. Jesus Navas who played in the Euros has been left out. Yeremy Pino makes the cut whilst Marco Asensio misses out yet again.
It is a bit disappointing to see just four Barcelona players earn a call-up to the squad that Luis de la Fuente has named. The likes of Cubarsi, Balde, and Fermin can make a case that they deserve a spot in that squad list.
Barcelona fans will not be happy to see Pedri and Lamine Yamal called up yet again due to the fear of injuries. International breaks have never been kind to the club in recent seasons and the last thing they want is for Pedri or Lamine to break down. Such a situation would be catastrophic for the club for the entire season and let’s hope De la Fuente manages their minutes wisely.
