As addressed by FC Barcelona in an official statement, the latest news from the club states that Jordi Cruyff is set to leave the Catalan side. The current Sporting Director of the club, he is expected to leave after the summer transfer window concludes.
Following the news that Director of Football Mateu Alemany is soon to leave the club following the conclusion of the summer transfer window, similar news for Jordi Cruyff arrives not soon after. The 49-year-old is expected to embark on a new project following the end of his contract with FC Barcelona in the summer.
The son of legendary player and manager Johan Cruyff, the Blaugrana blood runs deep within the veins of the Cruyff family. Jordi himself spent 4 years at FC Barcelona as a player from 1992-1996 and then would go on to spend two more years from 2021-2023 as the club’s Sporting Director.
The following was the official FC Barcelona statement regarding the announcement:
“Sporting director Jordi Cruyff will not be renewing his contract at the end of the current season due to his wish to embark on new professional endeavors. He announced his decision this Tuesday morning to President Joan Laporta at an emotional meeting in which he explained that after two years in his position, he is leaving to face new challenges.”
Having enabled a strong connection with various staff members at the club, the presence of Jordi Cruyff was very much welcoming at the club. Moreover, he was also quite the progressive factor in the transfer window, having had a particularly strong influence in the arrival of signings from the English Premier League, as per journalist Alfredo Martinez.
The current Sporting Director arrived in 2021 after ending his 1-year stay with Chinese Super League side Shenzhen FC as manager of the club and then becoming the Sporting Director at FC Barcelona.
With both him and Mateu Alemany set to leave, President Joan Laporta will need to exercise caution and care with their respective replacements. Consequently, whoever these appointments end up being, will have a massive responsibility on their shoulders moving forward.
