The economic difficulties that FC Barcelona is having to cope with have limited the actions of the Catalan giants to an extreme extent during the ongoing transfer window. Several key targets had to be let go of simply because of the financial limitations that Barcelona currently struggles with.
As a result, the Catalan giants have been looking for various measures that can be taken in order to ensure a more sustainable economic record within the club. Measures that would allow Barcelona to incorporate new signings more easily as well as be able to register existing players.
One such measure that the Catalan giants have decided to take was the contract extension of German goalkeeper and Barcelona captain Marc Andre Ter Stegen. As per the official announcement by FC Barcelona, the German international renews with Barcelona until 2028, extending his previous contract expiration of 2025 by three more years.
As per details that have been reported regarding this extension, it will allow Blaugranes to have a bigger salary margin in the final days of the summer market with the German keeper agreeing to differ a part of his salary that would be paid mostly in the final three years of his new contract.
With this opened-up salary margin, a report from SPORT suggests that Barcelona will almost immediately attempt to register secondary keeper Inaki Pena before the upcoming clash against Villarreal.
Moreover, SPORT claims that it is much more likely that Barcelona will first register Inaki Pena rather than Marcos Alonso, who continues his own wait to be registered, simply because the defender’s salary is significantly higher than that of the goalkeeper’s and would consequently take up much more of the freed up salary margin.
Ter Stegen’s extension with the deferred salary showcases the pure leadership and dedication of the Barcelona caption to the club. Like other captains before him, he takes an integral step in helping the Catalan giants be able to work better in the present and it is hoped within the club that his example will be a source of motivation for others, namely Frenkie De Jong as Barcelona are reported to negotiate the same terms with him as well.
