Official: Sergino Dest departs Barcelona to join PSV Eindhoven on loan

Barcelona defender Sergino Dest

FC Barcelona came into this summer transfer window with one of the aims being the offloading of fringe players. The achievement of this aim is significantly important for the Catalan club as it would lead to reductions in the wage bill, which are necessary before the club can get new players.

Barcelona have already made some sales this summer. Players like Franck Kessie, Ousmane Dembele, and Nico Gonzalez have been sold, while Samuel Umtiti has been released by the club. However, the Catalans are looking towards further trimming their squad in the remaining time of this transfer window.

Barcelona officially send Dest on loan

Barcelona have been successful in offloading another player, as they have officially announced an agreement with the Dutch club, PSV Eindhoven, for the loan of Sergino Dest.

The USA international will join Eindhoven on a season-long loan, which ends on 30th June 2024. PSV will have the option to make the transfer permanent at the end of this loan agreement, while Barcelona have the right to retain a percentage of proceeds from any future sale of the fullback.

Thus, Dest would be spending his second season on loan on a trot, as he spent the last season also on loan at AC Milan. Now, he will be playing in the Netherlands, where he already has experience of playing, as Blaugranes bought him from Ajax for €21 million in 2020.

Barcelona can sign another right-back in the coming days

During his time at the Catalan capital, Dest has made 72 appearances in total, starting 56 games. The right-back scored three times in the two years he played for Barcelona.

Needless to say, his time and performances at Camp Nou were quite underwhelming, as the player only won a Copa del Rey during his entire time with the club.

Meanwhile, Barcelona have been hunting for a more competent right-back for the next season, and recent news indicates that the Catalans are close to signing the Portuguese fullback, Joao Cancelo, on loan from Manchester City.

His arrival can significantly enhance the right flank for Xavi, as Barcelona would have a right-back who can be effective in the attack.
