The managerial role at FC Barcelona has always been a big controversy often talked about. Over the last few weeks in particular, Xavi’s place at the club has been heavily questioned. However, the latest defeat to Villarreal seems to have been the final nail in the coffin for Barcelona.

Beyond just the doubts of Deco and new managerial involvements, as highlighted by Gerard Romero, there is now official confirmation about Xavi’s future.

As made official by the FC Barcelona, the coach has publicly confirmed that his time as Barça head coach will come to an end on June 30th:

“I want to announce that on June 30 I will no longer continue as the coach at Barça. I think the situation needs to change course, and as a Culer, I cannot allow the current situation.”

With this news now in mind, it seems that FC Barcelona really have nothing but Xavi’s legacy left to fight for this season. Only the UEFA Champions League remains as an approachable competition, and while it is too difficult to think of Barça as favorites, they are still in contention to win.

Against Napoli, in February, even that competition could reach its demise as far as Barcelona is involved. However, it could also spark a renewed sense of purpose for a team quite devoid of one. For Xavi, at least, that competition is his final and most fair opportunity at a title this season.

During his time at the club, in almost two and half seasons, the Barcelona coach and legend managed to win a La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup. His tenure began with a huge ask when he arrived at an unstable time for the club, but he leaves a team with quite a few promising youngsters with great potential.
