The recent struggles of FC Barcelona have been a frustrating watch to say the least. Many fans of Barcelona are unhappy with their side’s recent performances. The manager, Xavi Hernandez, is also being scrutinized and criticized for various tactical reasons.

Within this onslaught of criticism and media attention, even individual players are being called out. Goal droughts, lethargic performances and some even being labeled as just not good enough. However, there are a few who have not put a wrong foot down in any way.

One of them, as Mundo Deportivo reports, is Inigo Martinez. The summer arrival came to Barcelona on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Athletic Bilbao. He was a signing requested directly by Xavi and was brought in to add depth to the defense.

Originally expected to be the fourth choice as a central defender, it seems the tides have shifted. The 32-year-old is now an undeniable starter within Xavi’s team and has been exceptional by himself. Having played in six of the last seven games, his prominence is increasing game by game.

Beyond just his defensive reliability, Martinez provides that cutting edge through his passing. No other Barcelona defender has passes with the vertical penetration that he offers.

Constantly providing service to his forwards with great line-breaking passes, Martinez seems to be one of the missing pieces that Xavi was looking for.

Beyond just that, his commitment to the cause is unparalleled. Unlike other players, he remains determined to not even waste a second that could be better used.

Against Rayo, after missing a header, the player showed disappointed passion but instinctively ran back as quickly as possible to ensure he did not leave his defensive duties unattended.

Moreover, he also acts as a guardian for both the badge and his teammates. Against Alaves, he was there to defend 16-year-old Lamine Yamal. With Spain, he was the one who ensured Gavi had support following his ACL injury.

Despite whatever criticism comes Barça’s way, Martinez has been an excellent signing. He now competes to be a regular starter and with the way things are going on an individual level, he has a significant claim to do so.
