Among the various objectives that FC Barcelona now look to assess and conclude within the final days of the summer transfer window, the case of departures is one that the Catalan giants must ensure to allow the progression of other objectives that consider said departures a prerequisite.
American fullback Sergino Dest has already been sent out on loan to Dutch side PSV, and others such as Marcos Alonso, Ez Abde, and even Eric Garcia remain players that Barcelona could consider letting go of. However, the prime candidate to depart following Dest would be considered as French defender Clement Lenglet.
Previously expected to be heavily linked with English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur and Spanish outfit Sevilla, with even Real Betis recently having emerged as potential suitors, it appears that the Frenchman is on his way out to a club completely different from those that were reported previously according to a Spanish source.
According to Catalan journalist Gerard Romero via Jijantes FC, the 28-year-old central defender is set to depart FC Barcelona and is now heading to England. Expected to play for a Premier League outfit after all, Romero has claimed that it will not be Spurs however.
The option of Tottenham Hotspur has been discarded according to Romero and while details regarding what kind of a move it is are not yet clear, the claim from the Catalan journalist is that the Barcelona defender will definitely play in the Premier League for the 2023/2024 season.
Barcelona have been looking to offload Lenglet for quite some time now and it has become evident over recent weeks. With his departure, considering his significant salary for this season taking into account his deferred payments, Barcelona would be much more at ease when it comes to player registrations and incorporations of new signings as well.
It is yet to be confirmed by other sources that the player will eventually end up in England, as thus far the Barcelona defender is mainly being linked with three clubs. Moreover, the case of Spurs is the only one linking him to England. It will be interesting to see exactly what this mystery club turns out to be.
