FC Barcelona faced the first defeat of the 2024-25 season last night as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Monaco in their opening UEFA Champions League match. Monaco came up with a brave game plan that paid dividends, but the early red card handed to Eric Garcia made it even more difficult for the Blaugranes to get a result from this game.

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, one of the Barcelona players, Pedri, was still satisfied with the way the team had played despite their numerical disadvantage as he spoke to the media after the game:

“Despite the early red card, I take away that the team showed character and created chances with ten men. It’s not easy to play so many minutes with one less player, and if we don’t win, yes, it’s the worst game of the season. It’s not the way we wanted to start the Champions League, but the new format gives us seven matches to turn it around.”

The red card and the goals could have all been avoided if the Barcelona goalkeeper, Ter Stegen, had been a little more careful in his actions. Pedri also explained why the mistake on the red card sequence occurred and how it impacted the team in this match:

“It was a communication error between the two of us, it can happen. We have to move forward and try to make sure it doesn’t happen again. With one less player, we ran three times as much, and we need to recover, but I’m sure we’ll be fine on Sunday.”

One of the positives from this match was the return of Ansu Fati to the field. The midfielder revealed that he congratulated the youngster on his return: “I congratulated Ansu on his return, I have a lot of affection for him, and he’s going to do very well.”

Hopefully, this defeat will not impact Barcelona’s form too much going forward. The Catalans have another difficult game against Villarreal coming ahead, and they will have to clear up their heads to continue on their winning La Liga run.
