One of the most highly rated attacking midfielders to have developed at FC Barcelona but who left the club in the very early stages of his career is the Dutch youngster Xavi Simons.
The Dutchman left the Catalans for PSG in 2019, and after having a difficult start to life at the French capital, the youngster regained his form after joining PSV Eindhoven as a free agent.
At PSV, he scored twenty-two goals and gave twelve assists in forty-eight total appearances, and his good performances led to him being re-signed by PSG for €4.5 million.
Having a great season at Leipzig
Simons is currently on loan at the German club RB Leipzig, where he has had an amazing start to the season. He has already scored three goals and given four assists in nine games, and Xabi Alonso’s side wants to keep him beyond the season-long loan.
Other clubs like Barcelona and Manchester City are also interested in the forward. However, according to SPORT, PSG managers are seeing Simons’ loan to Leipzig only as a temporary stage of his growth, as they want him to get regular game time and the experience of playing in the UEFA Champions League.
Simons a part of PSG’s long-term plans
PSG are already planning to incorporate Simons into their first team for the next season with whom Simons has already played eleven games between 2021 and 2022.
PSG are currently very happy with Simons’ growth but are not surprised at all. Thus, the youngster is a part of PSG’s plans for the future, and the Parisians would not consider extending his loan with Leipzig.
The possibility of him leaving for a direct European rival like Barcelona or Manchester City is even smaller, and it is highly unlikely that Barcelona would be reunited with their former academy ace any time soon.
