Given their rather vulnerable financial situation, Barcelona welcomes any and all possible injections. The club has already had to sell off percentages of valuable long-term assets as well as certain naming rights in order to help finance the entity’s sustainability. However, Barcelona also realize that they have too many surplus options in the squad as well.
Often times, players that do not see enough prominence end up going away on loan. Similar is the case at FC Barcelona, as the club has loaned out several underperforming players to interested clubs with the hopes of finding them new homes. Certain players are only sent out for developmental purposes, while others for mainly financial ones.
Sergino Dest, an American fullback, is an example of the latter. The 23-year-old fullback is currently on loan at Dutch side PSV and has been enjoying quite a great spell in the Eredivisie. However, his great run of form could be problematic for Barcelona as well, according to SPORT.
Originally, Barcelona had also included a purchase option in the loan contract for Dest when he left for PSV. The Catalan giants had seen the American’s value decline and thus believed a €10 million purchase option would be justified. However, things have changed quite a bit since then.
Dest has exploded with PSV, so much so that Transfermarkt has revalued the player to €18 million. Moreover, there are reports of other interested clubs that would be willing to pay beyond that €10 million purchase option. However, much of the power is in the hands of both PSV and Dest himself.
Reportedly, PSV are quite convinced by the fullback and intend to activate the purchase option. All that they will need is the approval of the player, and then they could be more than willing to make his stay permanent.
It has to be remembered that Dest has a contract with FC Barcelona until 2025, so he would automatically first return to Catalonia if PSV do not exercise their purchase option.
Already a regular for PSV coach Peter Bosz, Dest has been irreplaceable for the Dutch club this season. Across all competitions, the Barcelona loanee has made 19 appearances. He has also managed to score once and assist twice in these games.
