Pursuit of next pivot highlights new hard realities at Barcelona

FC Barcelona are seemingly getting nearer the achievement of one of their summer transfer window objectives as they can sign a replacement for Sergio Busquets in the coming week—the player who is going to replace the legendary midfielder would be Oriol Romeu.

Diario AS claims that if everything goes as planned, Oriol Romeu will become a Barcelona player before the coming Wednesday. While the player does not have as high a profile as some other names that Blaugranes were linked with recently, the fact that he will return to the club after twelve years would still be an appealing story for the Cules.

Although Xavi wants Romeu because of his positional game, which would be helpful for the team, Barcelona’s pursuit of Romeu also indicates the financial despondency at the club.

It is well known that if finances were not a problem, Barcelona would have gone for a better option in the current market. Martin Zubimendi was one of the midfielders that the club had been wooing for some months, but his high release clause made him an impossible signing for the club.

Similarly, Kimmich was another name that Barcelona were linked with recently, but Laporta also ruled out his signing. Ruben Neves was another option, and Laporta had also promised Jorge Mendes that he would buy Neves, but Xavi ruled out his signing because the Portuguese did not meet the coach’s requirements.

In the last few weeks, the only options Barcelona had to replace Sergio Busquets were Nico and Romeu. Xavi did not believe Nico was ready to warrant a place in his lineup. The head coach would rather have Romeu in the squad, as his skillset is markedly different from other midfielders at his disposal, including Pedri, Gundogan, Gavi, and De Jong.

However, it remains to be seen how Romeu would perform at a club of Barcelona’s stature. The player was unable to convince at Chelsea but has gathered more experience in ensuing years and was an important player for Girona last season. Romeu and the club would be hoping he can make his return to Barcelona worthwhile and help the club win silverware next season.
