FC Barcelona currently have a lot of decisions to make ahead of the winter transfer window. The Catalan giants have addressed the long-term injury to Gavi and are now looking at alternatives to bolster the squad in January, given that the right financial situations align.
The two primary targets being reported hail from Brazil and Argentina, respectively. The first is Vitor Roque, with the 18-year-old striker currently contracted to Athletico Paranaense. On the other hand, the secondary target is a like-for-like midfield option that Barcelona are currently assessing, Giovani Lo Celso.
Currently playing for English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, Xavi reportedly appreciates him a lot. His technical skills and quality are liked by the Barcelona coach and there is a certain belief within the club that his lack of prominence within Spurs could make his acquisition a little bit easier.
However, it seems now that the likelihood of that is going to put under a new challenge. Ange Postecoglu, current head coach of Spurs, has issued his own statements about Lo Celso, as per Fabrizio Romano:
“I looked at Lo Celso really well before I got here. You can see he has certain qualities. Technically, he’s a very creative player.”
The Australian-Greek manager further commented on the future of the Argentine player. Stating that his chances will come soon, he hit a dagger towards Barcelona:
“He’ll get an opportunity over the next few weeks to come in and make an impact.”
With this knowledge, Barcelona may have to become more wary. Given the recent unavailability and injury issues with Spurs, particularly in their midfield, Lo Celso could end up getting more chances.
As such, Barcelona may have to turn their attention elsewhere. Recent reports have suggested that the arrival of Vitor Roque is gaining more and more clarity. However, if Barcelona truly wish to reinforce their midfield, they will need to scout other options as well.
