Despite rumours of his relations with the club being strained during the last summer, Frenkie de Jong has worked his way to gain a fixed position in FC Barcelona squad. He was an important part in the club’s squad which won La Liga this season, and played an integral role in this conquest.
As reported by SPORT, the player is looking forward to remain with the Catalan club going forward. The player himself confirmed this, when he spoke to media after joining his Netherlands national team.
The player claimed that he was feeling good at Barcelona, and although “You can never say that it’s 100% because anything can happen in football, but I suppose that next year I’ll be at Barcelona”.
From these comments, it is clear that Frenkie wants to remain with the Catalan club, and contribute further to its current project headed by Xavi. He is also expected to play an even more important part in the squad, as his midfield partner, Sergio Busquets, has left the club, and the Dutchman will be having a greater role to play at the base of the midfield.
However, before starting training with the Catalan team in his new role, the midfielder will be going into the UEFA Nations League with his national side, and try to return to Barcelona with an international trophy to his name.
His team will be facing Croatia in the semi-finals, which take place on the 14th of June, and if he advances from this stage, he will be facing either Spain or Italy in the final. With the conclusion of this tournament, Frenkie will go on his much deserved vacations, after a season in which he won his first La Liga and Spanish Super Cup titles with FC Barcelona.
He started 43 matches in total during this season, scoring two goals and providing four assists, but his influence was much more important at the base of the midfield, contributing both to attack and defence.
