FC Barcelona have just recently made the departure of Sergio Busquets official, and now they might be working on another. Another one of the Blaugrana side’s captains also had his future discussed between his representative and Mateu Alemany.
That captain was none other than Jordi Alba. As per SPORT, the Barcelona third captain has been given two ultimatums by the club when his representative, Vicente Fores, met with Director of Football Mateu Alemany.
One, the player can decide early that he leaves the Catalan side by termination of his contract and he is then able to freely negotiate a transfer elsewhere. Or two, the player can agree to a significant pay reduction that would fit into the new limits that the club wishes to impose in order to make their wage bill more sustainable heading into future seasons as to avoid further complications with Financial Fairplay.
Following the jaw-clenching finish to the recent game against Copa Del Ray runner-ups CA Osasuna that saw FC Barcelona win their La Liga Santander clash by a singular goal courtesy of Jordi Alba himself, the veteran Spaniard would then go on to kiss the club’s badge in front of the celebrating Camp Nou.
Throughout his time at the club, there has been no doubt of his loyalty and commitment to La Blaugrana. Now, as his age declines and his contract runs dry, FC Barcelona are insisting that a viable ending be found to his future as the economic state of the club must be stabilized accordingly.
As per the report, should Jordi Alba continue on the basis of his current contract, he would be amongst the very highest of earners at FC Barcelona come the start of the 2023/2024 season.
An unsustainable financial continuation in its own right, the player is moreover no longer the first-choice fullback either, as the young and electric Alejandro Balde is now clearly the preferred left back for head coach Xavi Hernandez.
