Barcelona has often times produced some of the most exciting attacking talents in football. A proud tradition at the club, many of the greatest products of La Masia have been excellent forwards. Fortunately for Barcelona, this tradition does not seem to be stopping any time soon.
While the latest match against Antwerp in the Champions League was seen as being inconsequential, it still brought some despair. A 3-2 loss is never a good look on Barcelona, regardless of the stakes. However, the game also came with a shining bright light.
As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, the night was one of celebration for young Marc Guiu. The 17-year-old striker trained within the Barcelona subsidiary has become sort of a fan-favorite, and many have been calling for him to get chances. Against Antwerp, that chance arrived.
After being brought on as a substitute for Robert Lewandowski in the 72nd minute, Guiu made sure to leave his mark. He did so by doing something that the Polish striker has recently struggled with, converging the chance presented to him.
In the first additional minute after the 90th, Guiu latched onto a cross by Ilkay Gundogan from a set piece and steered a great header into the net. This now marks his second goal for the Barcelona first team, after his heroic winner against Athletic Bilbao.
His goal could even have been more important on the night, but a subsequent defensive lapse of judgment saw Barcelona concede a third goal just moments later. Despite the result, Barcelona can at least be confident about the quality of their young striker.
His judgment of the ball, positioning, and clinical finishing make Guiu an extraordinary talent. Unimpressed by the pressure of the Champions League stage, he continues to perform no matter where he plays. For Lewandowski, Guiu’s emergence and the expected arrival of Vitor Roque should both come as clear warning signs.
