The economy of Barcelona is not exactly at its strongest point. La Blaugrana continue to depend on special measures to facilitate their requirements when it comes to recruiting players. In recent windows, low-cost signings and free transfers are mainly what Barcelona have pursued to improve the team.
As such, it is always key for the Catalan giants to keep an eye out on good market opportunities. Players, irrespective of their age or experience, can be good opportunities for the club as long as they can guarantee quality as well as a feasible acquisition cost for Barcelona.
Accordingly, Mundo Deportivo has thus highlighted ten defenders that will all be free agents in the summer of 2024. Consequently, that would make them all reasonable targets for Barcelona to consider pursuing next season.
Mats Hummels (aged 35)
Currently a player for Borussia Dortmund, Mats Hummels is a household German name. The defender is one of the greats of the game, and with his contract expiring in the summer, he could be an addition of great experience and leadership to a young team.
Yerry Mina (aged 29)
Formerly a Barcelona player himself, the defender could return to the club in the summer. Since his departure, he has gained valuable experience in the Premier League and Serie A, and that has made him a much more capable defender than before.
Eric Dier (aged 29)
Another player with Premier League experience, Eric Dier is currently a player for Tottenham Hotspur. He has lost prominence this season under a new coach and he could be looking for minutes elsewhere if things remain the same.
Victor Lindelof (aged 29)
Currently a player for Manchester United, the Swedish defender has decent amounts of exposure to both the English league as well as European competitions. He would be a decent squad player to recruit in the summer for free.
Lukas Klostermann (aged 27)
With both quality and experience guaranteed, Lukas Klostermann is a strong option from Germany. However, his contract with RB Leipzig ends in the summer of 2024 and Barcelona could really use that to their advantage.
Alex Witsel (aged 34)
The Belgian is a versatile player who can also act as a central defender. His knowledge and experience in La Liga could be a great bonus for Barcelona. His contract with Atletico Madrid is also set to expire in the summer.
Cesar Azpilicueta (aged 34)
Another player from Atletico Madrid who could become a free agent in 2024, Cesar Azpilicueta is quite the decorated defender. His former days with Chelsea were especially fruitful, and he has even been formerly linked to Barcelona. Ultimately, the move did not materialize then but it could very well be resurrected in 2024.
Mario Hermoso (aged 28)
The third and final player from Atletico Madrid on this list, Mario Hermoso is a proper La Liga veteran. While he currently remains in Atletico Madrid until the summer, he was formerly an Espanyol player.
It is often quite difficult to see former Espanyol and Barcelona players make moves to the other Catalan club, but he still remains an option.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka (aged 26)
The English defender began his season on a high note with Manchester United. However, physical problems have led to him losing his spot due to unavailability. While he is slowly regaining his spot, he still could become a free agent in the summer.
Daniele Rugani (aged 29)
Contracted to Juventus until the summer of 2024, Daniele Rugani is another potential free agent for Barcelona to pursue. However, he currently does not hold much importance in the Italian team and hardly features for them. Barcelona could use this to their advantage and possibly lure him away in the summer.
