FC Barcelona is seen as being much more than simply a football club. ‘Mes Que Un Club’, translating to ‘More than a club’, is the literal motto of FC Barcelona itself.
However, while this slogan is primarily representative of the social and political importance of the club, it is also reflective of just how big a brand Barça is. As such, many of the sponsors that the club has displayed across the years have all been quite high-end.
One specific partnership that has remained strong for several decades now is between Barcelona and American sports brand Nike. Since first becoming affiliated in 1998, both parties have built a strong relationship.
However, as SPORT reports, it is being speculated that recent times have not been too positive. As Barcelona have come to the realization that Nike’s current pay-out to La Blaugrana falls short of what the market value of the club estimates, certain differences are beginning to grow.
According to various sources, Nike are currently paying Barcelona around €155 million per season. The Catalan giants, however, believe this value should be negotiated. Moreover, Given their financial troubles, any and all kinds of monetary additions are seen as valuable help for the club.
Possibly due to these rising tensions, other brands are beginning to take notice as well. According to SPORT, one particular suitor is another American brand, New Balance.
They have reportedly asked Barcelona about the possibility of breaking away from their current deal with Nike but it seems that the Catalan giants are contractually obliged to remain with their current sponsors.
Beyond just the payout, it seems Barcelona has other complaints as well. The lack of services to their players alongside issues with recent designs and supply have also created tension.
Interestingly, sources close to Nike relay information that suggests that it is they that have an issue with Barça’s lack of coordination and delayed decision-making.
Given their long-term history, it seems hard to associate Barcelona with another brand. However, the Catalans remain under contract with Nike until 2028 as of right now. So far, it seems that the contractual deadline will continue to be followed barring any surprises.
