FC Barcelona are well aware of the uncertainty that seems to be ever-existent in the world of football. Nothing is ever guaranteed, and a lot of good or bad can arise from the risks that are ultimately taken. For Barcelona, at this moment in time, risks are something that are especially dangerous to take.

However, when it comes to their youth talents, Barcelona are rather daring it seems. The Catalan giants are not shy when giving them their deserved opportunities. Even then, there are cases that manage to surprise both Barcelona and even themselves.

Such was the case with the contract and continuation of 17-year-old Pau Cubarsi. The Spanish defender signed a temporary contract extension last summer that keeps him at Barcelona until 2026 with a release clause of €10 million.

While this will change drastically in the upcoming year if things go to plan, there is another element to his previous contract that comes as a surprise. According to SPORT, during the negotiations of his last contract renewal, his agent was hellbent on ensuring he was placed as a player for Barcelona Atletic.

Originally, the plan was to ensure Cubarsi’s growth with the Juvenil teams first. However, his representatives believed that due to the quality he possessed, the Juvenil would be a step below his standards. Ultimately, Barcelona gave in to those demands, and the agent’s words have since been proven true.

In fact, even his advanced demands seemed to have undermined just how special Cubarsi would turn out to be. Instead of just the Juvenil being a step too low for him, it turns out even Barcelona Atletic was a level he managed to surpass. He now is a regular for the first team under Xavi Hernandez, and has also received his first senior call-up with Spain.

It was due to his eruption in the Under-17 FIFA World Cup with the junior Spain team that managed to truly highlight his qualities. As a consequence, he has now become one of the most prodigious talents in the Old Continent. With his next signature, Barcelona hope to assign a €1 billion release clause to his contract and retain him as a pillar for the future.
