Sergio Busquets’ illustrious career with FC Barcelona is coming to an end at the conclusion of this season. While he will be leaving the club on a high, there is one peculiar shortcoming in this league campaign that the player would be looking to mitigate in the remaining league matches.
Sergio Busquets has made 40 appearances for Barcelona this season, which are in addition to his national side appearances in the World Cup. However, in all of these 40 games, the veteran midfielder has not been able to score a single goal for the club.
While this inability to score does not come off as particularly striking when keeping in view the Spaniard’s game style and positioning on the pitch, it does seem peculiar when each and every other outfield player has had a goal to his name this season.
Balde and Kounde also did not have a goal previously, but they scored in the last league game against Espanyol and thus got their name on the scoresheet.
Still, ending a season without any goal is not an anomaly for Busquets. He influences the game in other highly significant ways, and the current season may be his fifth season which he has ended without scoring a goal. Last season, the midfielder had three league goals, which was a personal best.
This lack of goals in no way tarnishes the midfielder’s legacy at the club though. Busquets has won 9 league titles in his 15 seasons at the club, and has played a key role in all of these victorious league campaigns.
With his gripping influence on the team, the club would find it extremely hard to replace Busquets in the coming years. However, goal-scoring is one area where the club would not miss the midfielder too much.
