As Barcelona reach the climax of their 2022/2023 season, the Pichichi remains an award they want to possess. An accolade of immense prestige, it holds value as a legacy and statement of quality for strikers.
Robert Lewandowski is the current favorite to win it, having had a great start to his life in Catalunya. He remains hotly chased by a handful of contenders and the main competition arrives in the form of Real Madrid’s own potent talisman in front of goal, Karim Benzema.
The Pichichi title is awarded annually to the top goalscorer in the Spanish first division. Previous winners have included the likes of many Barcelona and Real Madrid greats such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez, and Raul.
This season, the previous winner Karim Benzema is competing for the Pichichi against Robert Lewandowski as mentioned earlier. The Barcelona man currently leads the scoring charts with 19 goals while Benzema is in second with 17 goals.
Both forwards have also recently just scored in their previous league games, with Benzema scoring a hattrick against Almeria in Madrid’s 4-2 win while Lewandowski scored a goal in Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Real Betis.
With just a handful of games left, both players are locked in a heated race to the Pichichi title, with the players around them potentially also trying to get their respective strikers to end up as the league leaders in terms of goals once the competition comes to an end.
