By now it has become evident that FC Barcelona do not necessarily consider the right-back position to be one where they would be spending a significant portion of their funds for the summer transfer window.
The club understands that the position itself is one where they lack natural options and have utilized players of other specializations in said position only to realize the concept’s lack of sustainability.
According to Mundo Deportivo, at the moment, the club has decided to only act upon the position and its respective recruitment options should they have the required funding available for it following the acquisition of other more important recruits as per the coach’s understanding.
The most recent report claims to have with it the club’s potential plan and respective options for the position should scenarios and conditions meet, and what the likelihood of certain options arriving is at the moment.
Conversations have been made with agents of multiple players. The likes of Manchester United’s newly renewed Diogo Dalot, Benjamin Pavard of Bayern Munich, and Thomas Meunier of Borussia Dortmund have all had their agents speak with Barcelona to understand future prospects. The agent of Joao Cancelo was also involved, but it now seems the Portuguese fullback may be straying away from Barcelona.
The case of Villarreal’s Juan Foyth is different, however. Despite Xavi’s understanding that he would sportingly be a great fit for his Catalan side, the financial perspective is that his price tag is already way too high for Barcelona to even consider making advancements.
Should no arrivals come in said position, there is a contingency plan in place. Xavi believes the likes of Sergi Roberto, Jules Kounde and now even potentially Julian Araujo, are all viable options to represent Barcelona on that right-hand flank of the defense for the upcoming 2023/2024 season.
