The higher-ups of FC Barcelona remain fixated on turning around their current economical situation while simultaneously tending to their sporting needs and recruiting players that they believe will improve the club heading into the upcoming 2023/2024 season.
However, it is no secret that in order to make noticeable progress in both registering pending contracts and bringing in new arrivals, Barcelona will first and foremost need to offload players that are surplus to requirements yet remain a sizeable weight on the wage budget.
Accordingly, in what has been a topic of discussion and multiple reports over the past few weeks, French defender Samuel Umtiti and FC Barcelona have parted ways through a termination of the Frenchman’s contract, as has been officially announced by the club.
The recent report from SPORT regarding this topic sheds some further light on the whole situation, with the report itself stating there could be a major possibility that the 29-year-old could have agreed to forego a sizeable amount, if not all, of his deferred and pending payments in order to make the termination happen smoothly.
According to the report, the previously agreed amount to be paid to Umtiti was an alleged €20 million a year for three seasons following his renewal in January of 2022 in order to facilitate the arrival and registration of Spanish winger Ferran Torres from Manchester City.
Following what has been a solid season in Italy whilst playing for Serie A side Lecce, the now-former Barcelona defender will be looking to make new connections and ply his trade elsewhere in Europe. During his time at Barcelona, the Frenchman was a winning part of two La Liga titles, three Copa Del Rays, and two Spanish Super Cups.
