FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are set to lock horns in a top-of-the-table tie in La Liga this Saturday. The two teams are currently standing at the first two positions in the league table, with Barcelona enjoying a three-point advantage over their El Clasico rivals.

Thus, this game will not only be important for getting the bragging rights over their fiercest rivals but will also have significant implications for the league table.

However, as Diario AS has reported, despite the fact that the two teams are separated only by three points, Barcelona’s position at the top of the table will not be facing any realistic threat on Saturday.

If Real Madrid end up beating Barcelona, they will have 27 points, the same that the Blaugranes have to their name at this point in time.

But to replace the Catalans on the top of the table, the Merengues will have to win this El Clasico by a 9-0 scoreline, as Barcelona currently enjoy a +23 goal difference, while Real Madrid have a goal difference of +14.

According to La Liga rules, it is the goal average that acts as a priority tiebreaker between two teams with the same number of points, and in this regard, Barcelona have a clear advantage.

The Blaugranes have scored 33 goals up to now in La Liga and are the top-scoring side in the league. Real Madrid rank second in this regard with their 21 goals.

Thus, there is no realistic chance of Real Madrid replacing Barcelona at the top of the league table on Saturday. But the Blaugranes can take their lead even further, as a win would allow them to get a six-point gap over their main contenders in La Liga, while also having the goal difference and goals scored averages in their favor.
