Frenkie de Jong, the Dutch midfielder at FC Barcelona, has increasingly been featuring in the news in the last few days. The Catalan club has offered him a contract renewal, which will see his association with the club go from 2026 to 2029, albeit with lower wages than what he is currently earning.
Furthermore, if the player does not accept this renewal in the coming weeks, Barcelona will be open to letting him leave to join another side but would demand around €100 million for his transfer.
Now, another update has been provided by SPORT in this regard, as the newspaper claims that an offer for Frenkie has already been received by Barcelona. The report claims that the Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur has offered €60 million for the Dutchman, including variables.
Spurs would offer a four-year contract to Frenkie, and the Dutch midfielder will earn as much as he is currently earning at Barcelona but will have to meet certain objectives for this purpose.
Currently, De Jong is one of the highest earners in the squad, particularly because of the wages that he deferred during the pandemic.
As far as Barcelona are concerned, the Catalans have made it clear that they will renew De Jong only if he accepts a salary that is in line with the economic realities of the club. Thus, the Blaugranes are looking to lower his salary from €30 to €15 million.
While Barcelona are not sure about the midfielder’s plan, they do not rule out a transfer to get rid of his salary if he does not accept the contract with lower wages.
Meanwhile, De Jong himself has also not communicated a wish to leave or stay with the club with anyone. He is currently going through a great personal moment, as his first child was born recently, and he also loves the club and the city.
However, he is also disappointed with the reality of the club and would be willing to leave to join a club that can compete for the UEFA Champions League.
