The result against Rayo was disappointing for FC Barcelona, but it did not end their season. For now, La Blaugrana have the opportunity to remain competitive in La Liga and are still active in other competitions. However, they can afford no mistakes in their upcoming match.

For Barcelona, their next encounter will be in the UEFA Champions League. The Catalans will welcome Portuguese side Porto to the Montjuic Stadium for Matchday five of the Champions League Group stage. With both sides tied on points and goal difference, only head-to-head advantage keeps Barça on top.

Xavi’s men will thus want to ensure both safe passage to the knockouts as well as guarantee first place. However, the problem and dilemma for the Catalan coach now lies in the selection for the game. As SPORT highlights, two defenders in particular are causing problems in that regard.

With Ronald Araujo rested against Rayo Vallecano, his presence against Porto is more or less guaranteed. Alongside him, Jules Kounde could potentially also be utilized. However, the Frenchman’s rather lackluster recent performances could be another reason why Xavi may have benched him against Rayo.

The two primary candidates that continue to be a headache for Xavi, however, are Inigo Martinez and Andreas Christensen. Both the two central defenders have been loyal servants to the club this season. Their technical abilities coupled with their defensive reliability have been instrumental assets for Barcelona this season.

However, in the scenario that Araujo ends up occupying the right-back position, there will be competition for the two remaining positions. Kounde, Martinez, and Christensen would all have their respective claims on those two vacant slots.

Yet, this is the kind of depth that Barcelona has aspired for. Possessing four elite central defenders ensures that they do not significantly feel the absence of any one of them whether it’s due to injury or suspension. However, given the stakes of the game against Porto, Xavi’s decision for the match will be crucial for the season itself.
