Given their financial troubles, it is not beyond Barcelona to consider selling valuable assets. They have already sold percentages of certain media and naming rights in the past to balance their books, and it seems that while those problems continue, they will remain in a position where difficult decisions may have to be taken.
In terms of players, the most obvious case was that of Frenkie De Jong. Barcelona president Joan Laporta himself confirmed the arrival of offers reaching up to €100 million. However, the Dutchman ultimately ended up staying at Barça.
While Laporta and Barcelona may consider it to have been a good ‘decision’, it was ultimately Frenkie De Jong himself who engineered most of what allowed him to stay.
Barça’s untouchables
Despite his quality and importance, he was seen as replaceable by Barcelona. He has managed to turn that belief around, however, through his strong displays this season. Yet it begs the question about who exactly is even left as an untouchable at Barcelona.
Two names, according to SPORT, are undoubtedly irreplaceable for Barcelona. Gavi and Pedri, the two Golden Boy winners that Barça currently possesses. One arrived for a transfer fee that seems almost silly now, while the other is a complete creation of La Masia itself.
Valuable assets
Both players are in a position where a transfer for them would generate well and beyond the €100 million mark for Barcelona. However, SPORT believes that the Catalan giants have no intention of letting that hypothetical value come to fruition. The two are ‘forbidden’ to be considered as saleable assets.
Both the 20-year-old Canary Islander and 19-year-old Sevillano are considered key for Barcelona. They are set as examples of exactly what the Blaugranes aspire to be in terms of sustainability. Entrust their own youth and bet on talented stars to become greater assets in the future.
Passing the torch
With the influx of talent both within Barcelona’s academy and subsidiary, as well as in the European stage at large, there is no lack of assets. However, for both the short term as well as the years up ahead, Barcelona want to retain both their Golden Boys.
