FC Barcelona does not shy away from offering continuity to their best players for years to come. These extensions, despite sometimes being expensive to maintain, are crucial in order to guarantee sustained quality. However, not every player holds the same importance for Barcelona when it comes to contract renewals.

Some players, in terms of contract extensions, aren’t considered priority cases. Often, these players primarily serve as rotational or backup options. Nonetheless, it’s important to handle their contract situations promptly to assist them in planning for their future beyond their current contracts.

For Barcelona, two such players are Marcos Alonso and Sergi Roberto. Two Spanish veterans with a lot of experience and achievements, they are not exactly prominent players for Barcelona at the moment. As a result, SPORT has highlighted what their futures look like.

The case of Marcos Alonso seems quite clear-cut. A former Chelsea player, the Spaniard does not intend to stay beyond this season. Xavi trusted him a lot last season thanks to his versatility, but things are quite different now. With an increased depth and quality in the team, Alonso has greatly lost his prominence.

No longer even a first-choice backup, neither as a left-back nor as a central defender, Alonso’s time seems to be up. Reports suggest Atletico Madrid and certain Premier League sides may be interested in taking him away in 2024.

Sergi Roberto, on the other hand, would be willing to continue for another year. Despite not being a prominent player either, his role differs from that of Alonso. A leader within the dressing room, and the first captain of the team, Roberto provides much more as a senior player of Barcelona.

Moreover, even on the field, he remains more trusted than Alonso. In the latest game against Almeria, it was his brace that gave Barcelona the victory. Furthermore, he would also reportedly be willing to lower his salary demands to continue at the Catalan club.
