FC Barcelona have just recently received positive news regarding the initiation of the European Super League. The Catalan club, alongside eternal rivals Real Madrid, believe that they have made a historic gallop for the Super League. However, Barcelona are yet to face even more adversity it seems.
Barcelona and Real Madrid both still stand with the Super League project. However, other parties are still not on the same page. To be precise, UEFA does not seem to be on board about the idea of a new European Super League.
As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, the European body of UEFA does not seem too convinced with the recent ruling. In their eyes, the final decision only highlights certain problems with UEFA and FIFA, rather than being a green light for the establishment of an entirely new Super League.
According to the words of the European football governing body, the ruling is still not an excuse for the advancement of the Super League project:
“This ruling does not constitute an endorsement or validation of the so-called ‘super league.’ Instead, it underscores a pre-existing deficiency within UEFA’s prior authorization framework, a technical aspect already acknowledged and addressed in June 2022.”
“UEFA trusts in the robustness of its new rules, specifically ensuring compliance with all relevant European laws and regulations.”
Moreover, UEFA continues to stand its own ground as well. While Barcelona have released their own understanding of the ruling, the one from UEFA is taking a different route. In their defense, UEFA states that its objective persists:
“Upholding the European football pyramid, ensuring it continues to serve the broader interests of society. We will continue shaping the European sports model collectively with national federations, leagues, clubs, fans, players, coaches, EU institutions, governments, and partners alike.”
Furthermore, they also directly target the ambitions of the El Clasico rivals. According to their implication, Barcelona and Real Madrid are essentially trying to disrupt the stability of European football. As such, their statement concludes with:
“The European football pyramid, based on solidarity, declared by fans and all stakeholders as their irreplaceable model, will be safeguarded against the threat of disruptions by European and national laws.”
