The FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong took on the media head-on as he accused them of spreading lies and rumors about him when he talked to journalists ahead of the match against Napoli.
The Dutchman’s frustration on that day was not without merit, as he has been the subject of constant news regarding his situation at the club, and the wages that he is earning at the club. There is no doubt that his image his been tainted to some extent with this media focus on his contract.
In a bid to provide some clarity on the matter, the Spanish publication MARCA has tried to answer some questions regarding the player that have been in the minds of many Barcelona fans.
Firstly, the newspaper claims that the midfielder has never been paid the reported figure of €40 million during his time at the Catalan club. For the current and the next season, Frenkie will earn €18-19 million gross, plus some bonuses, the largest of which goes up to €9 million.
Secondly, there is no truth in the perception that Frenkie milked the club during its difficult time, but the truth is to the contrary. The midfielder actually deferred his wages on former Barcelona President Bartomeu’s insistence, and he earned only €3 million in one season and €9 million in the ensuing season though he had a salary of €12 million.
The Dutch international collected these €12 million deferred wages during the last two years of his previous contract, after which he was given a contract of €18 million in wages.
Thirdly, it is true that Barcelona wanted to sell De Jong in previous transfer windows. The Sporting Directorate at that time was pushing for his departure because of the high costs he incurred in his wages, amortization, bonuses, etc. However, the President’s direct intervention stopped his departure at that time.
Fourthly, Barcelona are not prioritizing a sale of Frenkie right now, and actually want to extend his association with the club by offering him a contract till 2029, but with lower wages.
However, the club is also clear that if the Dutchman does not accept this offer, a sale now would be perfect as it would not only allow the club to save a significant amount in wages but also ensure they do not lose him for free in 2026 when his current contract expires.
As things stand, Frenkie has not yet given any response to the contract offer made by Barcelona. Still, the player was clear that he wants to remain at the club in his last press conference, and there is as yet no reason not to believe what he says.
