There is no doubt that FC Barcelona have one of the most celebrated strikers of the last decade in their ranks, i.e., Robert Lewandowski. However, it is also becoming clearer with every passing day that the Pole is no longer in the best form of his career.
The striker’s numbers have dropped drastically this season, after having broken several scoring records in his first season at Barcelona. He had a scoring average of 0.89 goals in every game in 2022, but that figure dropped to 0.5 in 2023, as he scored only 24 goals in 48 games in that calendar year.
This season, the Pole has been drawing blanks in too many matches, and as SPORT has reported, Lewandowski has himself recognized that he was significantly below his standards last year in an interview with a Polish YouTube channel:
“In 2023, there was a moment when I felt not only mentally but also physically weaker. That year, all the bad and negative things seemed to come together at once. It all accumulated.”
The veteran striker also confessed that he did not approach the problem in the best of ways, and needed too much time to get out of this poor form:
“Of course, I also made mistakes. I fell into a kind of current and needed too much time to get out of it, to return to normality, and in football, it’s not so easy to do it in a week or two weeks.”
Lewandowski pointed out the Qatar World Cup 2022 as an event that impacted his performances after it was finished:
“During that period, I did physical tests and individual training in my free time, and it turned out that it was going well, and it also gave me many answers. I see that I continue to progress physically, even in the club.”
“I can look back, and this is an indicator for me that shows there are still good times ahead, but in 2023, there was a moment when my spark went out.”
Lewandowski has also been spotted to be involved in some heated arguments with his teammates on the pitch, and the Pole also addressed this issue in the interview:
“When I see something on the field, I react because I want to take advantage of the situation better. These are normal conversations between footballers, which sometimes from the outside, fans may wonder ‘Why do this?’. The truth is that the same thing happens every day in the locker room or during training.”
From this interview, it is clear that Lewandowski cares for the club and his own declining performances. His confession that he was not in the best form is highly welcome, but it now remains on him to get back to his best to help Barcelona end the season with at least one trophy.
