Although signing a competent midfield pivot was the first priority of Barcelona for the current transfer window some weeks ago, the Catalans are now putting all their efforts into completing the signing of two main attacking targets, i.e., Nico Williams and Dani Olmo.
The Spanish duo is now the top priority for the Blaugrana club, and the signing of a pivot has now taken a backseat in the club’s plans.
Previously, it was believed that Barcelona can go into the next season even without signing a pivot, as they had several options in their squad and in the reserve team for this position. However, the latest developments might force them to look for a pivot in this window.
According to SPORT, the only natural and experienced midfield pivot in the Barcelona squad, Oriol Romeu, is only one step away from rejoining his former team Girona on loan.
This operation has been going on for several months, and both the club and the player have agreed to the terms of the contract. Only the player’s signature and the formal medical examination are left before this move is completed.
The midfielder will join Michel’s team immediately and has already left the Barcelona squad in the USA. Thus, he will not play even a few symbolic minutes in the upcoming friendly against Real Madrid, which is scheduled for today.
It was at Girona that Romeu had played the best football of his career. His performances under Michel had put him in the showcase that ultimately led Barcelona to get him back last summer as a surprise replacement for Sergio Busquets.
However, his return to Barcelona did not pan out as expected, and he declined in prominence as the last season went by. The good relations between Girona and Barcelona facilitated this move for the midfielder after the two clubs had already completed the transfer of Pau Victor.
