Nico Williams, the Athletic Club winger who is impressing a lot in the currently underway UEFA EURO 2024, has been linked with FC Barcelona for quite some time now as the Catalans look to strengthen their left-wing position in the current summer transfer window.

Although this signing would significantly strengthen the Blaugrana team, their economic situation means they will not be able to undertake this operation easily. The Catalans are yet to return to the 1:1 rule, and there is a lot of uncertainty about which of the targets they will be able to obtain this summer.

In such a context, a recent interview from the Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, would have significantly enhanced the spirits of the Blaugrana faithful in this regard. As SPORT has reported, the top Barcelona official talked with the journalist Francesc Garriga and made some interesting comments on this matter:

“Obviously, I like him, a lot. As of today, we can afford to sign Nico Williams. We can handle a signing like Nico’s… It’s up to Nico. We are working on the operations that Flick is requesting from us… Soon we will be able to announce the operations we have worked on. Soon we will return to normal Fair Play conditions.”

The club President also talked about the new Barcelona coach and his adaptation process at the Catalan club:

“Flick speaks English and is making an effort to learn Catalan and Spanish. It’s a commitment on his part, he is very serious about it. We will hold a presentation and the idea is for him to do a press conference before going on the tour.”

The Blaugranes have suffered two significant blows in recent days as Pedri and Araujo have been injured while on international duties. Laporta confessed their absences would be a significant loss for the team:

“Starting the season again with Pedri injured is not something I like, but I am sure that with the new trainers, things will go well. The same goes for Araújo. We need to be strong and try to have a competitive squad.”

Laporta’s comments would definitely raise the spirits of Barcelona fans as they would be looking forward to a star addition to their team after their main rivals, Real Madrid, have added Kylian Mbappe to their squad.

Hopefully, the Spanish winger can end up at Barcelona to form a highly pacy and effective attack with the likes of Lamine Yamal, Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Ferran Torres.
