The upcoming match between FC Barcelona and Sevilla can be a memorable event for the Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, as he can step on the pitch once again after having announced his retirement from professional football after the end of the UEFA EURO 2024.
Marc Andre Ter Stegen’s serious injury made Barcelona look for a free-agent replacement, and there were few players better than Szczesny who met this criterion. After being linked with the Catalans for a few days, the signing officially took place, and the goalkeeper is now looking to get his first minutes in a Barcelona shirt in the game against Sevilla.
As SPORT has reported, Wojciech’s brother, appeared in an interview with Polish media and opened up on this operation. He explained that Szczesny had offers from other clubs as well, but he decided to come back to the field because of the stature of the Catalan club:
“I know he actually had more options before FC Barcelona approached him. Given the size of a club like FC Barcelona, such an offer had to be considered. The magic of the club and the feeling that I could experience a special moment again by returning to football was key… The offer from Barcelona came at the right time.”
Szczesny’s brother also talked about the role of Robert Lewandowski in his decision to join Flick’s team: “The choice was easy for him because his friend Robert Lewandowski has been playing in Barcelona for some time.”
It was actually a surprise to see a goalkeeper of Szczesny’s quality retire last summer. The goalkeeper had highlighted some mental issues behind this decision after his retirement. But now back in action, the Pole will hopefully be able to get back to his best and help Barcelona win a major trophy in what could be his only season at the Catalan club.
