Xavi asks Barcelona to stall operation involving 18-year-old fullback – report

FC Barcelona continue to proceed with caution as they look set to possibly lose one of their key stars in the attack to French side Paris Saint-Germain in a shocking move.

As has been confirmed by the likes of Fabrizio Romano, 26-year-old French winger Ousmane Dembele has already agreed terms with Ligue 1 outfit PSG and could soon be set to make his move over to France.

Not to be left completely bare by his departure, Barcelona have already begun to work on potential consequent signings that can be brought in from the funds that the club will generate from the Frenchman’s departure.

One of the absolutely crucial positions that FC Barcelona wish to reinforce is that of the right-back spot. Currently short on specialists in said position, Xavi and Barcelona believe the arrival of a top-level fullback on the right-hand side could elevate the level of the team.

The two primary targets remain Manchester City star Joao Cancelo and Real Valladolid youngster Ivan Fresneda. At the moment, there were multiple reports circulating that the Catalans have already begun to make advancements towards the signing of the latter.

However, as per Spanish journalist Javi Miguel, it appears that Xavi Hernandez has requested that Barcelona ‘postpone’ the operation involving Fresneda in order to first assess properly the departure of Dembele and the conditions it entails.

Moreover, the Catalan coach is vigilant to the case of Cancelo, who remains his primary priority, and if there is an actual opportunity to bring him in at any given point. If not, the Barcelona coach will provide the green light to Fresneda’s arrival.

As it stands, it appears that while Cancelo is the priority, as highlighted by Fabrizio Romano, his signing still remains much more complicated than that of the 18-year-old Valladolid fullback.
