In this winter transfer window, the only addition made by FC Barcelona has been that of Vitor Roque. Although the Brazilian was originally scheduled to arrive in the next summer transfer window, his arrival was moved ahead with Gavi’s injury which allowed the Catalans to register Roque for the second half of the season.
There is already a debate at the club that getting a midfielder instead of Roque would have been more beneficial for Barcelona. But as things stand, Roque has joined his new club with very high expectations on him, mostly because of the high price that Barcelona paid for him, €30 million fixed and another €31 million in variables.
The publicity that Barcelona made about the player through their media has further increased the pressure on the player to make an instant impact. However, according to SPORT, Xavi understands that the youngster needs time to adapt to a new country and club, and is taking a gradual approach with him.
Vitor Roque was not a priority for Xavi in the winter window, as he wanted a midfielder, but still, he is trying to do whatever is best for the Brazilian. Xavi has given Roque minutes in every important game since his arrival, other than the Super Cup games and the tie against Athletic Club.
The youngster made his debut in the very first possible game against Las Palmas with the score tied at 1-1, and replaced Lewandowski against Real Betis with the score drawn at 2-2. Thus, it is clear that Xavi trusts the youngster, and is open to giving him chances to shine at the highest stages.
Still, it is also clear that Xavi and the coaching staff are taking things steady with the Brazilian. The Catalans remember how Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo Goes came up through Castilla before becoming important players for Real Madrid, and believe if Roque is allowed to progress without burning up, he can also become a successful player at Barcelona.
